This is a bit weighty at times but does such a fantastic job at showing how alarms re: climate issues, ravaging of nature, colonization, etc. were clearly sounded by contemporaries through America’s past. Starts in the early 1800s at the beginning of the environmental movement in America as people watched the natural world deteriorate. We were warned about the climate crisis SO MANY TIMES.

“We all strive for safety, prosperity, comfort, long life, and dullness...A measure of success in this is all well enough...but too much safety seems to yield only danger in the long run. Perhaps this is behind Thoreau’s dictum: in wilderness is the salvation of the world. Perhaps this is the hidden meaning in the howl of the wolf, long known among mountains, but seldom perceived among men.” Aldo Leopold
