The historian has forgotten his training somewhat by this juncture by including a well-debunked theory plus some editorializing on psychological motivations of individuals during the Philotas affair. Even when reviewing his sources I think it is difficult to put speeches in the mouths of individuals without hard evidence. Nonetheless, this is fine if we consider it as a speculative piece of historical journalism.
