Fucking hard to read about the subjugation of women in this period, knowing the cultural landscape not far from here was changing radically. Even though the author in many ways displays empathy, and often hits good flow, it’s a bleak trudge through the footnotes, especially on a topic like this.
Second section much easier than the first.
