Like my mother had sent my siblings and I to religious schools, Somali parents often relocated to new places so that their children can attend Islamic classes. Like how I studied Latin, Catechism, and prayed, Somali children study Qur’an, learn how to read, write, and speak Arabic, and pray.

Before reading chapter one, I was surprised to find out that “there has only been one other book written about Somali members of the Saint Cloud community” (xxiii). Going to school, most of my friends were Somali. I am very surprised that despite the amount of Somali Americans in the area that there has been so little published.
