Although written by sociologists, this book doesn't suffer too seriously from the masturbatory verbal diarrhoea and skimpiness in primary sources that some sociological studies are grievously afflicted by. it has been very enjoyable to read how Mullan and Marvin systematically and patiently build their arguments in this book.

I felt like the whole chapter on Foucault and prisons was so unnecessary to the argument these poor writers were trying to make, but was probably put into the book to placate those pseudointellectuals who would inevitably yell (without much further thought): bUt wAT abT teH z0o aS A pRisOn??
