The topics are interesting, and perhaps even necessary, but the self-important, excessively verbose prose is nauseating. I won't even call it "academic", because that would imply this is the standard "academic prose" should aspire too. It is not. This is unnecessarily bloated, pretentious, name-dropping writing in desperate need of better editors.

I am appalled and astonished at Lai Ah Eng's essay on kopitiams. Full of sweeping generalisations. There isn't even any observational or ethnographic evidence cited for the kind of comments she makes about these spaces. Like that also can?
