i can already tell this is going to be one of those books where i enjoy the writing but don’t really like the story. i’m deeply invested in nathan’s journey already, but i just don’t see how this couple is meant to be rootable based on what jason did in the prologue.

drew honestly, the more i think about the implications of the plot, the more i don’t even want to finish this? reading a few of the reviews for the book and the authors’ statements in regards to the (justifiable) backlash has really soured me on this. a shame because i’ve really enjoyed everything else i’ve read from lisa henry. disappointing, too, that she would continue to defend this story. regardless of the writers’ intentions here, this is not a story even worth telling tbh.

A Wowza... just went and did a 'small' dive into what the backlash/issues were. Oy. Comming from a childhood marred in severe trauma from being raised in an actual Christian" Cult I know any book dealing with religion is going to have a bite to it for myself. but this sounds like a bit much.

drew i grew up in a super strict Pentecostal church so i can relate. i added the book to my to-read shelf based on the title and lisa henry's involvement, but the prologue really turned me off, and then hearing what other people had to say about what else happens.... yeah, don't think i could stomach this. i do like religious-themed books, though; i just find them kind of relatable and interesting. Vespertine was a really good read.

A Completely feel you in your relationship with the church and upbringing. Yet still not being put off by a religious theme. I do find
Some religious themed stories to be cathartic through... almost as a way of my own personal therapy.
I've just added Vespeetine to my list. Will let ya know what I think. :)

drew its a pretty angsty read, so beware of that. looking forward to your thoughts when you get around to it, though!
