Giving up on this one for now. It's not bad, it's just not Cryptonomicon. And I realize now what's missing. Cryptonomicon connected the war years of my grandparents with the tech boom of the 1990s, just after the last of my grandparents died and just before the dotcom bust. That combination of determination, personal connection and optimism isn't to be found in a trilogy of books about Baroque-era monetary systems.
