My problem with this series is the conflict focus switch midway. There are two conflicts running: first, the MCs (internal and between them), and second, the world around them (gang rivalry, cops, one dimensional villains, such as a parental figure). The first half focuses on the interpersonal and gets me good; the second half, our boys are a sweet couple, and the focus switches to the external and I disengage.
