Have a strong urge to DNF and I'm only on p2 of the preface. However it is a bookclub book, so I shall try and press on. Clunky, hard to read, pretentious, overwritten, are words my husband used when I asked him to read the first page, so I am not alone. Not that I noticed those things, I merely find it boring and irritating.
