Obviously, maintaining focus also means you shouldn’t try to have The Talk while at an amusement park, in a restaurant, or during a movie. Venues that can’t be completely private or totally free of interruptions are just not a good idea. You may have an amusing time, but you will not accomplish your goal.

Now is the time for your son to choose his path. Will he be sexually pure or defiled? Will he put himself and his future family at risk, or will he be a virtuous man? Explain to your son that it is foolishness to think he can make this decision when temptation is staring him in the face. He has to set his mind and will on obeying God before the moment heats up.

Explain to your son that there is no greater earthly pleasure than the monogamous loving relationship between a husband and wife. Let him know there is nothing more pure, noble, or sacred than the man and woman who refrain from sexual relations before marriage, for faithfulness to his future spouse begins now.

Men and women have equal worth in the sight of God, for they are equally similar to him, with each gender designed to play a unique and equally important role in this world.

In any case, your son will at some point experience a wet dream, and that should be expected. Help him understand that he need not be embarrassed should he have one, but that he should be able to discern whether or not it came from a lusting heart based on his thoughts when he wakes up—and remind him that if it did, the gospel offers him grace and forgiveness rather than embarrassment and shame.

Insist on blocking out all conceivable interruptions - this is a rule that should be applied to The Talk in every possible way. You must do everything you can to keep this time sacred. Your son must recognize that this time is your absolute top priority, so important to you that, in a day when many of us are often trying to do several things at once, you have ruthlessly eliminated all possible distractions...

Make it a point to acquire knowledge by determining now to listen first and speak later.

I find that if I take the time and I don’t press the conversations, my son really wants to talk to me about most things. Sometimes I need to spend extra time so that the inconsequential conversation has time to die down and the important stuff has opportunity to rise to the top. I have to remember that it’s about being available at the right times, not making the time when you’re available.
