Turns out Frank Herbert's Weirding Way and what happens to Paul in Dune Messiah are heavily influenced by the Nordic concepts of fate, how its constantly changing based on our actions of yesterday and today (which is apparently why the english language has past and present tenses but no future tense). Our fate only becomes immutable when "certain patterns of action become ingrained".
