Matthew Gregory Lewis, author of the infamous The Monk writes: 'I would advise you to read it by all means; but I must warn you, that it is not very entertaining till St. Aubyn's [sic] death. His travels, to my mind, are uncommonly dull, and I wish heartily that they had been left out, and something substituted in their room.' That's what I thought! Even imagining Valancourt as Andrew Garfield didn't help.
