I hate to keep complaining about this book, but despite enjoying it for the most part, there are so many little problems ruining it. For instance, repeatedly saying things like "There is an English menu, so fear not," reinforces troublesome mindsets that end up making English-speaking visitors look selfish and uneducated (i.e. the idea that other places are scary unless the English language is used).

A little too much of this blurb was spent warning readers to wear snowboots in the snow because the author neglected such an obvious precaution and ended up breaking her ankle at this location 😑

It's too bad there are so many silly little typos in this book. For instance on this page, rather than 'peering' it's "peerimg" with an m. Having so many little mistakes like these really takes away from the otherwise beautiful layout and design of the book.

The fact that this writeup about the manga museum in Akita is so genuine and glowing restores my faith in the author's self-proclaimed status as a Japanophile. The "Oh, Japan"s peppering the book still come across as condescending, but I don't feel worried anymore about my decision to buy this book, nor about trusting its recommendations!

Truly appreciating this chapter's focus on towns that could be helped in their post-earthquake/tsunami rebuilding efforts by increased tourism 👌

On the one hand, I want to compliment the book for the themed sections breaking up the location-based recommendations, but on the other hand, I want to give up on the book every time I see yet another belittling "Oh, Japan!" or personal complaints that make the author seem like someone looking amusedly down on the people and culture in a "Well, isn't that cute," haughty way.

It was a pretty cool tidbit to include the fact that this hotel creates its own Spotify playlists! Unfortunately, it was really tough to find (no link in book, nor on hotel website) so I have no idea if I found the right one. Still, this music sets a mood matching this book's visual style so it works!

For the most part, I'm enjoying this book and have added several sticky tabs to remember locations I'd particularly like to visit on my next trip to Japan, but the author's habit of throwing in "Oh, Japan, you really think of everything," always comes across as snobby and condescending, rather than impressed or flattering, like a backhanded compliment. It really irks me.

I stumbled across this book while shopping at Barnes & Noble yesterday (they sent out a really nice coupon!) and since my Tokyo Olympics dreams were dashed, it seemed fun to get a book that I could use to plan my future non-Olympic visit to Japan. Plus, the book's visual design is so eye-catching (like a book unicorn 🤩) that I would have wanted it even if I wasn't planning to travel!

First off, I am shocked to see no one has rated or reviewed this book on Goodreads yet! Sure, it was only published this year but it's still very surprising no one has finished it, or read enough to throw up some stars, and only a couple dozen people have it shelved at all 🤯
