Yeah. It's not that he's avoiding the ugly bits or even trying to downplay them; it's more that he's doing the, "Slavery is horrible, and awful, and a stain on this era of history, but it existed long before this era, and if the particular players we will focus on here hadn't done it, others would have..." And that goes on for several pages. Like, we get it--we understand that horrific things happened in the past and that the world was different then. All of these prefatory gymnastics are just making it more awkward.
