I'm just getting started with this book, but so far, I really like it. I'm intrigued by the topic because my Jewish book group has read at least one horrific book about treatment of Jews in Poland. But I've also read that Hitler hated the Poles and treated all of them horribly. The first Auschwitz survivor that Steinman meets on her first trip to Poland is a Catholic man who was arrested for fighting the Nazis.

Ok,now I'm hooked. I can't put this book down. Favorite quotation so far, a Jewish Pole speaking of the Cold War: "The last time we [Poles] had a 'genuine' Poland was the interwar republic. And it was the Poland of the Jews...In the paradox of Polish nationalism, a Jewish presence is what makes Poland 'genuine'" (page 111). This book is part history, part memoir, part travelogue. Fascinating and beautiful.
