I am really becoming drawn into this book. I am a bit of a modern European history geek, anyway, but Hasting's step by step account is superbly written to capture the full attention of the reader, regardless of whatever prior background interest that possess. I am really enjoying the character descriptions of the key players

As the book moves into the first battlefield confrontations, the author sheds light on the seldom discussed, though truly huge struggles on the Serbian - Austro Hungarian and Alsace Lorraine, Franco - German, fronts. Superb snapshots of such tragic early battles
