I started reading this novel here in Lahore. If I understand correctly, the story is set around (or right after) partition, the turbulence of which has negatively affected a tawaif.

Incidentally, my family took me to the Shalamar Gardens yesterday as a Father's Day surprise. A security guard pointed out to me how the terraced landscape included a platform for entertainment.
