Mr. McCune a religious bigot, horribly inattentive to his wife, very much her killer in most respects.

Anne could probably have done something, she is right about that; Mrs. McCune's religious affiliation aside, Anne did help her learn new things, and we know that Mrs. McCune was at least capable of rebellion (seeing that she went to the play against his will).

Mrs. Reid doing more to care for Mrs. McCune than Anne! At least she stayed for a while, seeing that the sick asked for them to stay; at least she argued for Dr. Gordon and found a plan to get him into that house! Anne's leaving felt melancholy, very nothing; a regret--a mistake--in the making.

Apparently Amanda is irritable, but she even holds things back from her parent--things that might have sparked a greater argument--so she clearly has some control, if arguing a point.

Currently Read:
A Midsummer Nights Dream
Romeo and Juliet
The Taming of the Shrew
Twelfth Night
I liked Twelfth Night the most because, for one, there is a gay character who isn't hated, and for two, it differs from The Taming and the Shrew in that women have at least some power. Like, a woman literally corrects a man who speaks of women derogatorily. It still has problems, but even some of the jokes were good.
