I’m very glad Ms. Springer is writing this way, and not dumbing down the story, but I think the publisher may have been misleading in putting “8 and up”. Only because the constant having to stop for explanations is affecting the flow of the story and making it difficult for my daughter to keep focus.

The back cover says “ages 8 and up”, and I’m feeling like this is misleading. I don’t know any 8 year olds who would know the vocabulary this book has. Perditorian, intermediaries, monomaniac, Mesmerism, galvanized, peripatetic, these are just a few of the words I’ve had to stop and define as we’re reading. Not to mention all the references to Victorian fashion and mores.
