We're at election time 2016 . . . and I did not see how splintered some families became at the Trump candidacy. Naturally, it didn't take long to find out, but I imagined that we'd all be able to continue to support each other as Americans. That became something that many, many people do not want to do. Even in times of crisis. Which, I think, is a new attitude to the last 5 years.

Implied and unrecognized racism - it's not strictly a black or white issue. Interesting how families of Indian heritage value lighter skin over darker skin. How can this evolve in different cultures?

Thus far it is a book that's hard to put down. But there's a lot to ponder, so it helps to put it down once in a while. What I learned - there are so many layers to racial differentiation - let's call it racism. It happens from within a race (too dark?); it happens among other races (prejudging qualities); it happens in a class level (white privilege). We should have to read this every 10 years. If only to reset

This fascinating graphic novel opens with a clever discussion of her 6-year-old's love of Michael Jackson and how that should open up discussions of race and tolerance - but doesn't, really. From there it's clear: "For years I was telling myself that America was changing for the better." Same here - but I've learned so much about hate in the last five years, that I can't hold that opinion anymore. Still, I hope.
