"I remembered also my days among the mad young men and women with drugged vacant eyes that didn't match the intensity of their voices as they explained over and over again what a mistake it was to keep them there; old men drooling from their medication; old women screaming in the night and setting off a chain of screams, the last of which was always my own..." This is so much better than expected.

Pat This looks interesting, Cat. My library has this book, which is amazing, but I will wait for your final verdict.

the_cat I've loved tha main character from the first page. I wanted to take him home lol. I can understand how his pride, bad temper and a bad case of stress can have taken him to that extreme situation of living in the street or rather as much far from people as possible. I dont see why his wife would let him be but maybe thats for the next book ;) The mystery part is fine. Kinda impossible to guess. I usually know who is the bad guy of a book sometimes even before the crime has happenned but this time I was clueless until the last pages. And the rings plot idea is very good for a mystery. I'm surprised americans havent made it into a tv series. I'm definetly buying the rest of the books of this series.

Pat Sounds good and I like that it's a series. I'll be picking it up soon.
I'm still patiently waiting for the BBC mini-series about the Matthew Shardlake mysteries. Hope it is still in the works.

the_cat Now you arent going to trust me anymore lol. I reckon my 5 stars were for Ellis Portal character and the way she slowly presents him as he goes remembering. The mystery part is a little weak and in the end kinda incredible...

Pat Lol, nooooo, I liked it! I guess maybe the problem for me was that the pieces of the puzzle kept falling too neatly and conveniently into place. I liked Ellis Portal and want to know where is going from here so I'll continue on with the series. Besides, I need to know what news his daughter has to tell. In her letter to him, she says she has some good news and some bad, but she only told him about the good.
I see you are reading a book by Judith Merkle Riley. I have only read one of her books, "The Vision of Light", and really enjoyed it. In the past, I always avoided books that included even a little bit of the super-natural or religion, but now I find it somewhat fascinating. Strange how your taste in books change over time.

the_cat Yup it does change. I used to read a lot more fantasy than I do nowadays. Now I favor mystery and historicals and only some fantasy now and then. But I do prefer historical novels to be just that. You wont find me reading those Tudor-vampire novels haha. In the case of Judith Merkle Riley I like those women she portraits who are very of their times, not know-all modern women with a period dress. I loved her Vision of Light trilogy. I recommend you to continue with the other books because they don't let you down and you can find out the end of her story.
The Serpent Garden I have to say I hadn't realized it had a supernatural touch as well from the description of the book. It does have angels and demons walking around, tricking people, kinda funny sometimes. I'm enjoying it.
