In about 1217, the Lateran Council of the Catholic Church decreed all Jews must wear a symbol showing they were Jewish on their out clothing. Also, for many years in the early 1200s, Simon de Montfort acts as a type of policeman for the Church putting down a sect in Southern France as well as rebellions. So the crusade at this time before 1217 was against Christians in Toulouse, Montpellier, etc.
