There, you see, Ive managed to bring you some wine today. It wont bring any missing legs back...but it will help you sing some sorry songs...Look at me. Did you ever see anything sorrier? But misery, you know, is the most honest emotion of all. I'm so miserable myself I'm the most honest woman in Vienna..

Life with its challenge, its excitements and its beautiful promise stopped for Sophie in that station. Out of high summer had come impossible war......it froze her anguished love.

Misfit I have this out from the library.

Dorcas Do you? :) its a fairly slow start. Lots of parties and frippery. I think that's to lay the scene for the turmoil of war to come. To show how it caught everyone off guard. He (actually a she -Mary jane staples) did a similar thing with the "Summer day is done ". Its a pretty effective tactic. Of course its made me search for every book she ever wrote...lol

Misfit I did not know the author was really a she. You got me in the mood to find another by him/her after your review of A Summer Day is Done and this is the only title they had.

Dorcas Are you on open library? They have "a summer day is done ".
I just bought some Emma Drummonds and I'm wishing now I went for hardbacks. The paperbacks have very cheesy covers and seem to be in "barely acceptable " condition. I don't know why I did it. I should just stick to hardbacks. Nothing irks me more than a creased and scraped up spine...woe is me

Misfit I haven't ventured over to open library yet. I have such good luck with my own library and/or interlibrary loan requests.

Emma Drummond is a good go-to author for me when I need a solid read. Such a good blend of history and romantic elements.

As for broken spines and stuff, I've been having that with some Amazon used sellers. I always pick those advertised as good or excellent, and I've had a few recent ones in very poor condition. I complained back through Amazon and they credited the price back and/or partial refund and said keep the book.

I'm seriously squeeing today looking at all the digital additions to the library's catalog. I swear they raided Sourcebooks.

Dorcas Do you get charged for your ILLs? Ours is $2 per book

Are you serious? There is never, ever a charge unless the lending library ask for a lending fee. That's only happened once and the fee was a lot cheaper than what the book was selling for. Rarely to they come back and say they can't find something. I've had books come from all over the country, college libraries and even a Benedictine Abbey in Oregon.

KCLS is pretty cool. They just keep buying more books, remodeling their branches, lots of computers in the branches and not a word about cutting back. And that digital catalog, here's what they have currently for historical fiction/romance.

Dorcas See now, that's how it SHOULD be!

Plus they have so many branches which means lots of Friends of Library sales. I'm so happy with the new digital titles they added today. I'll probably be able to take 10-15 older vintage books off the shelves and into the charity box and now read the kindle versions that don't have the tiny tiny font. I am so happy.
