This seems like a middle-grade novel so far, errantly marketed as YA. The author has a tendency to use several passive sentences in a row when describing, which interrupts readability. Hope to see the book pick up in pace and plot soon.

Okay so far. The writing style is nice, and the vibe feels historical, but nothing special. Like a middle-grade version of Twilight, minus the romance. Hattie's reaction to Jack's proclamation that she's not "ordinary" seems underwhelming.
