Sure, the events happened in a different time, but didn't they feel tired from torturing each other with all the mixed signals and the "he loves me, he loves me not"? I am, and they probably did (for reference: author's demise). The patchy French-Vietnamese translation is not helping, sometimes, it just doesn't make sense.
