Mors Gratia Artis. 4.5. Great! Tantalising mystery. Grim quest. Supernatural trap. The fascinating idea that the merest subliminal hint of the forbidden can cause devotion and addiction. Let down only by the slightly conventional “battling spirits” ending, though that’s in keeping with the spirit of the book. 15.5:4

Finale (and all connective tissue) 5. Fine mystery framework which subverts expectations and creates a definite sense of dread. Yet has a lightness of touch - I particularly liked the playfulness of the passage where we’re wrong-footed by “Patrick” surmising - wrongly - that he has died in an accident (a la Vault of Horror, etc.) 25:6

Music of Insanity. 4.5. Gruesome, a highly original concept and full of disorienting twists and turns. Very cinematic too. A bit cliched in terms of characters, but very little detriment from that. 20:5

Markowski Qt. 4. Nice bit of “jeopardy at the hands of crazed fanatics”. Lovely exploration of the pointlessness of acquiring a skill that won’t be used to the full (which made me sorry that the fanatics didn’t succeed!). Reminiscent of Hammer in the vein of Man Who Could Cheat Death. 11:3
