Northouse does an excellent job of assessing current leadership research, theory, and practice. While this is primarily a university textbook, it should be required reading for anybody who aspires to be a leader. Its assessment tools provide an excellent beginning point for analyzing one's own leadership. There is a new 9th edition available.
