I grew up obsessive about movies, not literature. I already knew by the time if my sophomore year in high school that I wanted a career like Oliver Stone (tho 1993 me was more partial to Verhoeven, DePalma and just so many others). By that I mean I wanted to be free to make "important" movies that people might actually like to watch and less important movies that excited and made me want to direct, like Talk Radio (1988) and Natural Born Killers (1994). When I read The Sun Also Rises, I knew THIS was the way. Just in terms of my disability and finding the medium that let me be writer, director, actor and cinematographer. This book and also The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles.
