That's an interesting comment as I too think that NYRB novels seem to have a certain is-ness although I would be hard pressed to describe exactly what that might be.

To me all the really good NYRB classics dance around period-specific concerns of morality, intriguing narrative devices and natural imagery that can be taken at a realistic or sublime level simultaneously. This one has it all. It's kind of cheesy but it is one of the most on-brand books they've released.
