Funny watching Fr S and Solzhenitsyn's relationship break down due to a differing "Hierarchy of Values," namely what Fr S believes to be ecclesial nationalism in A.S. To Fr. S, the east could collapse into the west and it wouldn't make a difference. Not the case with A.S.
Also, how wonderful to see my own cycle of rebellion and reorientation, the universal Christian fight, present in Fr. S's life. It humanizes him.

Written in 1977 but relevant today I think, "To fight the left in the name of the right is as meaningless as to fight the beginning of fall or spring. Therefore, most frightening in the contemporary world is the weakness of Christianity-it's own self-reduction-to the right...left, to religion...Frightening perhaps but unavoidable, because until Christianity overcomes all these reductions, it will not resurrect."

Fr. S writes, "I feel a sort of bad, 'unkind' tiredness. Bad because I want to run away from all the little passions, from the turbulent muddy waters where I have been floating for so many years. I want to leave, I am so tempted-and this temptation is so tiring!"
It's hard to be kind when I'm tired. Rather than running away, I should run to Jesus, who takes the burdens of my life upon himself. A timely reminder.
