I long for Kyoto
a hototogisu
Of Bashō's poem, Shūson says: "The first Kyoto in the poem is the real city; the second is the city that lives yet in ancient poetry and fiction."
The hototogisu is a bird known for its song and, in Japan, associated with the coming of the summer months as well as mourning, longing, and melancholy.

My study of Japanese has me able to mostly understand this poem now, which is a lovely surprise as it's one of my favorites:

How does one index haiku? First word/line, imagery, something else?

This book has the entire poem in transliterated Japanese and then another index with the English translations.The only other haiku book I have with an index is Jane Reichhold's Basho and it has an index of first lines in English.
