The single greatest mystery in the setting is not the Lady of Pain - it's just how a person like Duke Rowan Darkwood could have an alignment even remotely approaching Chaotic Good?
Even here it's evident: his pursuit of power and prestige, the total lack of sympathy or concern for anyone outside of himself, all the plotting and planning and hurting others... and it gets even worse if you've read Faction War.

I wonder why the Bleak Cabal's seen as so insane and depressed anyway. Nihilism is a common belief in the real world, and most people don't let it bring them down.
Maybe it's all the gods and powers and magic, all the genuine offerings of greater things, that make the final realization so much more crushing. I wouldn't know. I don't actually live there.
