Gilman was amazingly prescient on the matter of gender inequality but still a product of her time in other things. Consider this passage: "Beauty has laws, and an appreciation of them is not possessed equally by all. The more primitive and ignorant a race, or class, the less it knows of true beauty..." There's more but no space here. Just goes to show that a genius in one subject can be a doofus in another.

nice little example about a 'home-husband', how if men had been the one's to stay home and clean, cook, mend, etc. "civilisation" would not have advanced because when you're tied to the home there is little time for other pursuits. example in support of her point about what women could contribute to society if they weren't tied to the home.
