Suddenly this defeat.
This rain.
The blues gone grey
and the browns gone grey
and yellow
a terrible amber.
In the cold streets
your warm body.
In whatever room
your warm body.
Among all these people
your absence.
The people who are always
not you.

I have been easy with trees
too long.
Too familiar with mountains.
Joy has been a habit.
Now
suddenly
this rain.

(…) We are spirits housed in meat,
Instantly opaque to the Lord. As Jesus.

Walking home across the plain in the dark.
And Linda crying. Again we have come
to a place where I rail and she suffers and the moon
does not rise. We have only each other,
but I am shouting inside the rain
and she is crying like a wounded animal,
knowing there is no place to turn. It is hard
to understand how we could be brought here by love.

IN DISPRAISE OF POETRY

When the King of Siam disliked a courtier,
he gave him a beautiful white elephant.
The miracle beast deserved such ritual
that to care for him properly meant ruin.
Yet to care for him improperly was worse.
It appears the gift could not be refused.

The heart
never fits
the journey.
Always
one ends
first.
