"'Jill knows what's going on.'
'She doesn't know that we sleep together.'" (181) this reads to me like 'the couple who slays together, stays together'. the couple who sleeps together, weeps together? could be my brain is broken, though.

"'I don't want to use anything with you.'
Her eyes shot to his. 'You have to. I don't have—I'm not taking—'"
His mouth cut off the words ... 'If you got pregnant by me, I wouldn't run away. I'd want you and the baby and Jill and your family.'" (138) yeah clearly that's the concern and not just her generally not wanting to get pregnant. Also, he clearly wants to get her pregnant. gah.

"'I'm not his,' she said, tossing her dark hair toward Frank. 'I'm hers.' Her head bobbed toward Chris.
Hers? For a long minute, Gideon didn't make the connection." (119-120) Yeah, that's fair, I was also super surprised. And I've been inside the heroine's head! good on you for a mid-book twist, Delinsky, I guess?

"'I don't have time for a boyfriend. I told you that. I'm not interested.'
'A girlfriend then?' he asked before he could think to hold his tongue.
She scowled at him. 'Why are you so offensive.' It wasn't a question.
He held up a hand and said softly, 'Hey, I'm sorry.'" (87) oh casual homophobia, I was wondering when you'd rear your head. Not in the direction I thought, but hey

"'I'm just telling you you look pretty. It's a fact. Besides, I do give my men compliments. Just not like that.'
'Like what, then?'
'Like...hey, man, that's a wild shirt...or...cool hat, bucko.'
'Ah,' she said gravely. 'Man talk.'" (85) so smooth

"In the silence that ensued, she heard all that she'd blurted out and was appalled. ... She was debating hanging up the phone and burying her head in the trash can when he spoke again." (67) ok that's actually a pretty good image. who among us has not felt like a trashcan head every once in a while?

"'Real estate and interior decorating—those are the two fields women go into when they want people to think they're aggressive little workers.'" (63) gross. this "hero" is gross.

"They'd gone out to dinner once, but neither had wanted a follow-up, certainly not as a prelude to something deeper. Nina was a tough cookie, an aggressive woman, almost driven. Petite and a little bizarre, she wasn't Gideon's type at all." (45) she was almost...a career woman. almost...ambitious, if such a word could be applied to a female of the species.

"'Actually, I'm an interior designer. It may well be that I'll be working on this project.'
'Not if I can help it,' he said, because she was a little too sure of herself, he thought." (33) what. how old is he, six? wouldn't want the woman to be confident in her abilities, golly no

"'I bumped into Sara Thayer today. She wanted to know how you've been. ...'
Gideon winced. 'Come on, Johnny. She's a kid.'
'She's twenty-one.'
'I don't fool with kids.'
'She doesn't look like a kid. She's got everything right where it's supposed to be.'" (20) ughhhhhhhh this is giving Worcester a bad name
