One part that shocked me was when it was found out that the personalities of the colonist were switched with the personalities of the first colony.“She discovered that if you played another waveform, after the cancellation wave, you could ... well, you could essentially re-program someone. You could insert thoughts into their head."(233)I was shocked because if all people became others what happened to the originals?

On page 212 a shocking part I found was when they tried to communicateback to the ship in orbit they could not message the ship, noraccess the log."No one would be able to block all of the logs,” shesaid.“One person could.” She thought for a moment. “Captain Alonzo? Why would he do that?” This surprised me because if they crash landed ona plant that was not planned then they should have all forms of communication open

"On page 138 I found it important that the alien captain was more alien then human and needed to be submerged in water. Its important because it give a moment for the mutinous group a chance to assassinate him. "...when it's time you're going to have the honor and privilege of stabbing it in the heart."(138) This shows that even in the future there will be discrimination between races even if one is trying to help.

I was shocked when on page 27 the ship suffered from sabotage. the link that kept the colony module and and the ship together so when the release wheel was turned there was no change "...physical linkage that would open the clamps as the wheel turned. He saw that there was a break in the line.
No ... not a break. It was too smooth—too uniform.
It was cut..."
This shows that colonization of the planet was not wanted.

I was surprised when the colony pod was supposed undock from the main ship but the laches were sabotaged leading to the death of the commander who had to go into open space with no suit causing his death.

on page 17 I was shocked to learn that the colonist ship was sabotaged so when they tried to detach the colonist ship it was so the wheel that disconnects the the laches that keep the main ship and the colonist module did not do its job and had to be fixed by the commander which led to his untimely demise.
