This Earlier-Ravens pre-prologue chapter is TERRIBLE. It's like a bad Tolstoy short story. Strange names, no idea how these characters connect, they're all in a meadow shearing sheep. I can't tell who is an important character. 14 novels of this?

It got better. Much better. Still Lord of the Rings-ish, but with more female characters.

I've had this book on my shelf for months now, and I keep avoiding it because of this type of concern. I know people love it, but it looks sort of tedious to me. I'm definitely interested in your progress!

I'm plodding through it. I'm not very far. I'm on page 90 or so. I think my problem is that I read Dune and it was extremely well crafted. It introduced funny names and new characters chapter by chapter. It spoiled me. I'm sure something exciting will happen in this novel soon. But right now, it's a bunch of villagers learning about a dark force far away and seeing a spooky cloaked rider. It's lord of the rings-ish so far.
