Just finished chapter 2. Here are some thoughts for record keeping: if church was used as a political tool, is the separation of church and state an even possible thing? For empires and countries with state religions, this seems impossible.

Rereading chapter 1: I love how he described the rich histories of antiquity and dropped hints of personal opinions between lines, which only served to spice things up. With a logic and fluid argument, and vivid descriptions of what happened millennia ago, he has enthralled me to the pages.
