five quests and an oracle by pamela dean: this was excellent. at this point of the collection the structure was beginning to feel a bit samey (two women, meet cute, a pet) but this was so distinct and well-textured i didn't think of that at all. definitely going to try to track down more of pamela dean's liavek stories! 4.5 stars

a dog's chance by celia lake: i think this one mostly relied on atmosphere but i have no objection to stylish 20s vibes so. 3 stars

memories of magic by elva birch: vet gets called in on christmas to treat a miniature magical pegasus. a tiny snack of a story but i liked it. 3 stars

that magic touch by hailey thorne: you know how a lot of urban fantasy has this one specific first person voice and it's okay if you're in the mood for it but kind of boring if you're not? 2.5 stars

uncontrolled variable by sarah joiner: a touch slight but i don't mind reading overly honest methods: the short story. 3 stars

as if the sun came to shine by damkianna: really enjoyed the atmosphere of this troll heroine living in the woods waiting to discover if she's truly escaped the life she left behind. gave me silver in the woods vibes. 4 stars

pawprints in the snow by zoe chant: slight but cute! girl loses cat, girl asks neighbor for help, neighbor finds cat and also reveals she's her wereleopard soulmate. britta was way more chill about all of this then i could be which is why i will never achieve the status of paranormal romance heroine. 3 stars

how to get a girlfriend (when you're a terrifying monster) by marie cardno: sometimes you decide to explore the endless void and not only do you survive you find love! sweet monster shapeshifting love. 3.5 stars

watercat cafe by rachel manija brown: cozy romance in a post-apocalyptic world; loved the emphasis on food and community building. 4 stars
