So they were in the capital city on the way to the palace, but it took an entire night to reach it? Is the palace not in the capital city? And then they were banging the carriage door open with melons, but when Ria's too hungry to pick the lock open, she can't just eat the melons she was using? Instead she bangs on the door with her hands until someone comes? Because the melons weren't loud enough? Sigh.

These characters are just too ridiculous to make exploring the world worthwhile. So Rani can kill people with her telepathic snake connection; no one trusts her to control her kills; and yet her first response to being taunted and abused by her future mother-in-law ISN'T to "accidentally" kill her? Why? Why wouldn't that even cross your mind as a political possibility unless you are really, really terrible at politics? This book reads like a first draft.
