Could be a lot more engaging but hard to put my finger on why. It was dragging at the part where they marry and the author takes too long to make sure we know they're really in love, bla bla. I mean, just get to the spooky shit already. On a pettier note, there's also a character named "Marthy" and it's bothering me because my name is Martha and I never want anyone to ever call me Marthy, sorry.

I was thinking this reads like a Dorothy Daniels. It turns out that's because it IS a Dorothy Daniels ... one of her umpteen pseudonyms! Those books have been both hit or miss for me ... looking forward to seeing which category this one ends up in.

The plot is similar to Ross' "Phantom Wedding". Per the back cover, the hero and heroine meet and marry on an ocean liner. As soon as they dock, the groom vanishes and the bride must find her own way to his estate (Lenore). There she's told the man she says she married has been dead for three years. I hope this author does a much better job with this intriguing plot than Ross did, but that's probably a given!

Alix Lol Marthy is an interesting name

Sarah Mac What’s the deal with authors who are reluctant to get to the GOTHIC PARTS of gothic novels? I mean…why? Esp in a short read. There’s building suspense & then there’s avoiding what your audience came to see.

Alix Agreed. I also hate when it takes the heroine 50+ pages to arrive at the damn house. Like let’s get on with it already.

MV Agreed. It's a rare author who can make the book so engaging that I'm cool with waiting for the gothic atmosphere to come in.

Sarah Mac Oh yeah, quick arrival at the gothic setting is a must in pulps.
