If you want a sci-fi heavy on the actual sci and lighter on the fi, then this is the book for you. In some ways a classic “a man on his own must survive against seemingly insurmountable odds,” but on Mars and he’s a goddam scientist. At the same time the voice of our protagonist, Mark, keeps it from being a stale math or chemistry lecture, and the stakes make even the math somewhat exciting.
