Finished despite myself. Another reviewer termed this auto-biography a novel and I concur with that. The author makes it clear up-front that he had little time for anyone else, took care of himself at every opportunity and almost never actually was doing his job (laying or removing mines) or being outside (always inside) but the horrors and minutiae that he describes will be found in no other memoir.
