“The world health organization considers this to be a worldwide health concern focusing on the physical health concerns due to the dangerous amounts of mercury. Conceptualizing this as a mercury problem is problematic because it implies that desiring to look more white is acceptable as long as it done without mercury or other substances that may negatively affect health. The limited conceptualization hides the fact that an important contributor to the problem is oppression and internalized oppression.”
