Beth's comments on GPS are a bit dated (the book was written in 2006), but her prediction that radar would be replaced by AIS has not yet come to pass. Her insistence on knowing celestial navigation was not informed by the absolute omnipresence of GPS in our current lives. But there are many wise comments, e.g., about the charts in remote locations being less accurate than the plots given by the GPS - so true!

GPS is the saviour of the sea sick. I could never get to grips with a sextant.

Truly. An interview a couple of years ago by one of the Sailing mags with an old salt cruiser (Pardey?) about GPS went like this:Interviewer: Sir, don't you think it is prudent for every sailor to know celestial navigation?
Old Salt: Not really....
Interviewer: !!! But Sir, what would you do if your GPS failed?
Old Salt: I'd use my secondary GPS.
Interviewer: But, but, what if the secondary failed?
Old Salt: I'd use my tertiary.
Interviewer: But what if the Chinese started blocking or destroying GPS satellites???
Old Salt: Son, in that case, we have much bigger problems to worry about than whether a pleasure boat can find the entrance to the marina.
