If you failed to pay rent, a cemetery employee would use a long pole to push the body to the back of the “oven,” and an opening in the floor would allow the remains to drop through a shaft to the bottom of the vault and mix with the ashes or jawbones of other non-paying deadbeats. This practice is the derivation of the phrases “getting the shaft” or “being shafted.”
- no idea if this is true but it’s a great story

Why is New Orleans such a hotbed for hauntings and havoc? Some feel it is the long history of death and disaster, including two fires that early destroyed the city, three outbreaks of yellow fever, and countless hurricanes and floods. Seasoned with an ample dose of hoodoo and voodoo, and simmered over our many aboveground cemeteries, and you have a recipe for a perfect woo-woo gumbo.
