Slowing going as I slog along on this one. It's not a quick read. Bothersome to me is that every so often, the author inserts current political opinions, which I don't think are congruent with opinions from the time period in the novel. They are compassionate opinions about the plight of indigenous people and blacks, which I like, but to me they detract from the novel.
