“A Game of Thrones in China” by James Hudson primarily draws on the HBO adaptation, which isn’t my favorite approach, but the essay draws fascinating parallel between Cersei and Empress Cixi. As a reader who has enjoyed drawing comparisons between Cersei and Kösem Sultan, I always enjoy insights from others who look outside western frames of reference when analyzing Martin’s work.
