Rereading this is SUCH a rewarding experience! I first read it back in January 2022, before I knew much about Norse and early medieval history, and now after immersing myself in Viking culture and history for several years I can truly appreciate the level of detail that went into crafting this trilogy. From the terminology (brynja, niðing, drakkar) to the poems, this work deserves all the acclaim and more.

Very interesting setting (to me at least, because all the stuff I’ve been reading has been very high-fantasy) - this is more of a grounded Norse-inspired world. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still fantastical, but it feels a bit more real-worldy than WoT or Stormlight or Mistborn, for example.
